Assistant Vice Chancellor for University Communications

James GrantJames Grant is the assistant vice chancellor for University Communications, reporting to the vice chancellor for advancement. He oversees marketing, the campus Web presence, media relations, campus publications and video production.

Grant came to UCR in November 2010, coming from the University of Southern California. At USC, Grant had been head of the media relations program since 2005.

After serving as advertising manager for publisher Viking Penguin, Grant launched his career in university communications at New York University’s Stern School of Business. Since then, he has worked in media relations and communications management at UCLA, UC San Francisco, UC Merced, the Thunderbird Graduate School and Loyola Marymount University.

In higher education, Grant has worked closely with local, national and international journalists on trend and feature stories, media rankings, and breaking news. His experience also includes Web site and publications management, academic marketing, and strategic public communications planning.

Grant holds a bachelor’s degree in geology from Vassar College and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University.
